I was chasing the wrong problem. Apparently the Yamaha keyboard is recognized natively in Mavericks. No need to do anything. Where I was going off track was in the 'Add new tracks' Dialogue. Options are:

I was selecting the second choice above as I thought the MIDI device would be a line input. The correct choice is the first one. The MIDI keyboard is seen as part of your computer--it is simply an input device, like a mouse. Solved.
