Splunk Term License

With the Splunk developer license, you can use our SDKs and other developer tools to build big data applications that plug into Splunk's map/reduce data-processing pipeline, storage technology, and management facilities. And, you can extend and enhance Splunk Web through our app framework.

  1. Splunk may in its sole discretion and at no cost to Customer: (1) modify any Service and/or Splunk Software so that it no longer infringes or misappropriates a third party right, (2) obtain a license for Customer’s continued use of the Splunk Software, in accordance with the Agreement, or (3) terminate this Agreement and refund Customer any prepaid fees covering the unexpired Subscription Term.
  2. Splunk gets double downgraded due to its consensus forecast for fiscal 2022 revenue growth - 26% - is too high, says an analyst at UBS. And away from term license deals is consistent with both.
  3. Expand the indexing capacity of an existing license. Extend the term of an existing license, including a paid or free license. Reset an existing license. Open the sidebar menu and select System Licensing. The following screenshot shows the Licensing page for an instance running Splunk Light Trial. Click Add License.

Understanding splunk licensing and license administration

Splunk is a free software. You can download and use it for free if your splunk installation is indexing (processing) upto 500 MB of logs daily through it.If your daily indexing volume (size of logs collected by splunk) is more than 500MB and you want to use splunk advance features then you have to buy splunk license. splunk license cost depends on the volume of logs that splunk indexer process in a day (from midnight to midnight by the clock on the license master) . Understanding splunk license and its types will be useful for making core decisions while implementing and configuring splunk .Any host in your Splunk infrastructure that performs indexing must be licensed to do so.Splunk enterprise license starts at $6,000 for a 500MB/day perpetual license or $2,000/year for a term license.
How much splunk costs?
  • It all depends on the volume that you're indexing daily i.e. how much log data you are sending to splunk to process/store.
  • Splunk is free to download and use if your daily indexing volume is less than 500MB
  • The enterprise license starts at $6,000 for a 500MB/day perpetual license or $2,000/year for a term license
  • Its a tiered license . Bigger the license cheaper it is
  • Once you license Splunk Enterprise there is no limit to the number of users, searches, alerts, correlations, reports, dashboards or automated remedial actions. It's all included—at no additional cost.
  • Perpetual and Term LicensingThere are two options for licensing Splunk Enterprise:
    • Perpetual license: this includes the full functionality of Splunk Enterprise and starts as low as $4,500 for 1 GB/day*, plus annual support fees
    • Term license: this provides the option of paying a yearly fee instead of the one-time perpetual license fee. Term licenses start at $1,800 per year*, which includes annual support fees
Significant Volume DiscountsCustomers receive significant volume discounts with larger licenses (higher daily indexing levels). As shown below:
Term
  • Splunk pricing 100gb will cost around $1500
  • Splunk pricing 10gb will cost $2500
  • Splunk pricing 1gb will cost $4500

Splunk license estimation | How to estimate splunk license cost for your environment?
Estimating the Splunk data volume within an environment is not an easy task due to several factors: number of devices, logging level set on devices, data types collected per device, user levels on devices, load volumes on devices, volatility of all data sources, not knowing what the end logging level will be, not knowing which events can be discarded and many more.

As you begin the process of planning and implementing the Splunk environment, understand that the license size can be increased and the Splunk environment can be expanded quickly and easily if Splunk best practices are followed.

Below are few recommendation on how to determine how much license is needed.

  • Identify and prioritize the data types within the environment.
  • Install the free license version of Splunk.
  • Take the highest priority data type and start bringing its data into Splunk, making sure to start adding servers/devices slowly so the data volume does not exceed the license. If data volumes are too high, pick a couple of servers/devices from the different types, areas or locations to get a good representation of the servers/devices.
  • Review the data to see if the correct data is coming in or if there is any unneeded data that can be dropped.
  • Make any adjustments to the Splunk configurations needed and then watch the data volume over the next week to see the high, low and average size of the data per server/device.
  • Take these numbers and calculate them against the total number of servers/devices to find the total data volume for this data type.
  • Repeat this process for the other data types listed until you are completed.
  • If you would like to accelerate this process you can work with Splunk or a Splunk partner to get a larger temporary license to do your testing with.

How splunk licensing works?
By default splunk installation comes with 60 day Trial Enterprise license. This license allows you to try out all of the Enterprise features in Splunk for 60 days, and to index up to 500 MB of data per day.Once the 60 day trial expires (and if you have not purchased and installed an Enterprise license), you are given the option to switch to Splunk Free. Splunk Free includes a subset of the features of Splunk Enterprise and is intended for use in standalone deployments and for short-term forensic investigations. It allows you to index up to 500 MB of data a day indefinitely.
Splunk Free does not include authentication or scheduled searches/alerting. This means that any user accessing your Splunk installation (via Splunk Web or the CLI) will not have to provide credentials. Additionally, scheduled saved searches/alerts will no longer fire.
If you want to continue using Splunk's Enterprise features after the 60 day Trial expires, you must purchase an Enterprise license. Contact a Splunk sales rep to learn more.Once you've purchased and downloaded an Enterprise license, you can install it on your Splunk instance and access Splunk Enterprise features

Types of splunk licenses?
In general there are four types of licenses:
  • The Enterprise License
  • The Free License
  • The Forwarder License
  • The Beta License

1.Enterprise License - Standard splunk license
Allows you to use all splunk Enterprise features as below:
  • Authentication
  • Deployed Management
  • Scheduling of Alerts
  • Role-based Access controls

Enterprise Trial License:
  • 500 MB/day upon initial registry
  • Expires 60 days after start of using splunk
  • After expiration, must switch to Free License
Splunk license cost
2.Free License
  • Includes 500 MB/day of indexing volume, is free, and has no expiration date
  • Cannot Add more roles or create user accounts
  • Searches are run against all public indexes, “index=*’ and restrictions on search such as user quotas, maximum per-search time ranges, search filters are not supported
  • The capability system is disabled, all capabilities are enabled for users accessing

3.Forwarder License.
  • License allows forwarding (but not indexing) of
  • unlimited data
  • Enables security on the instance so that users must
  • supply username and password to access it
  • Forwarder licenses are included with splunk enterprise license

4.Beta License

splunk's Beta releases require different license that is not compatible with other splunkreleases
  • If you are evaluating a Beta release of splunk it will not run with Free or Enterprise License
  • If you are evaluating a Beta version of splunk it will come with its own license

How to configure splunk license? |How to install splunk license ?
You can install splunk license on any indexer server (as licensing is based upon volume of logs indexed by indexer).Splunk licensing installation have two components as below:
1. Licensing master - controls one or more license slaves. From the license master, you can define stacks, pools, add licensing capacity, and manage license slaves.
2. Licensing Slave -A license slave is a Splunk indexer which is a member of one or more license pools. The access a license slave has to license volume is controlled by its license master.
a. standalone licensing master -
If you have a single Splunk indexer and want to manage its licenses, you can run it as its own license master, install one or more Enterprise licenses on it and it will manage itself as a license slave.

b.Central license master
If you have more than one indexer and want to manage their access to purchased license capacity from a central location, configure a central license master and add the indexers to it as license slaves.
How to add/install splunk license?
1. Navigate to Settings > Licensing
2. Click “Add license”

3. select licensing file provided by splunk and click on install to install the license

Licensing master and slave connection:
When you configure a license master instance and add license slaves to it, the license slaves communicate their usage to the license master every minute
If the license master is down or unreachable for any reason, the license slave starts a 72-hour timer ,If the license slave cannot reach the license master for 72 hours, search is blocked on the license slave (although indexing continues).Users will not be able to search data in the indexes on the license
slave until that slave can reach the master again

How to add/configure licensing slave?
1. On the indexer (or search head) you want to configure
as a license slave, log into splunk> Web and navigate to
Settings > Licensing
2. Click “Change to slave”

3. Switch the radio button from Designate this splunk> instance, <this
indexer/searchhead>, as the master license server to Designate a
different Splunk instance as the master license server
4. Specify the license master to which this license slave should report

What is licensing pool?
A group of Splunk indexers configured to share a designated quantity of licensing volume. A pool of indexers is managed by a license master instance. The allocated quantity of licensing volume itself is also sometimes referred to as the pool.
How to create a licensing pool?
1. Goto settings>>licensing>> Create new license pool
2. Specify a name and optionally,a description for the pool
3. Set the allocation for this pool
4. Specify how indexers are to access this pool. The options
are:
• Any indexer in your environment that is configured as license slave can connect to this license pool and use the license allocation within it
• Only indexers that you specify can connect to this pool and use the license allocation within i

How to mange splunk license usage?
Once installation and configuration is complete managing license is easy by using splunk license managing app.splunk licese usage app provides a new dashboard which has several widgets that query to help you determine your Splunk license usage total over the past 24 hours as well as usage by host, source, and sourcetype. It contains timecharts to help you understand usage over time and see usage spikes as well as pie charts to help you to figure out which log files, sourcetypes, and hosts Splunk is indexing the most data from.you can download it from here
Thats all folks !!!

Products

uberAgent UXM

uberAgent User Experience Monitoring (UXM) is the original uberAgent product. uberAgent UXM covers all aspects of user experience and application performance.

uberAgent ESA

uberAgent Endpoint Security Analytics (ESA) is the newer uberAgent product. uberAgent ESA adds deep security visibility to the rich UX and performance metrics collected by uberAgent UXM.

uberAgent ESA and uberAgent UXM are deeply integrated. Both products combined require only a single endpoint agent.

uberAgent ESA cannot be licensed individually, it requires an uberAgent UXM license.

Licensing

uberAgent can be licensed per user or per device. A per-user model is attractive if end-users often access multiple devices simultaneously (e.g. a physical PC, Citrix servers and VDI desktops). A per-device model makes more sense where users share devices or where XenApp/RDS is used exclusively.

Per User License Model

In this model uberAgent is licensed per named user. A user is defined as an Active Directory account logged on either interactively or over the network on a monitored endpoint (a machine with uberAgent on it). Licenses can be transferred between users, but only after a 30-day period in which a license has not been used.

Per Device License Model

In this model uberAgent is licensed per named computer. A computer is a machine, either physical or virtual, running uberAgent. Licenses can be transferred between devices, but only after a 30-day period in which a license has not been used.

Two license variants are available:

  • Client licenses: for computers running client versions of Windows (e.g., Windows 10) or macOS
  • Server licenses: for computers running server versions of Windows

The server license explicitly covers infrastructure servers, remote desktop session hosts, and similar systems, too (e.g. Citrix Delivery Controllers, Citrix CVAD servers, Microsoft RDS, VMware Horizon).

License Type: Perpetual, Term or Service Provider

All licenses are available as perpetual, one-year term and service provider licenses.

How Many Licenses Do You Need?

The easiest way to find the number of required user or device licenses is to consult uberAgent’s licensing status dashboard. It tells you exactly how many licenses you have and how many are required.

Splunk License

Please note that in addition to the uberAgent license a Splunk license is required for uberAgent to work. Our data volume calculator helps you size the Splunk license correctly.

Note: uberAgent supports several alternative backends that can be used instead of Splunk (details).

Evaluation Licenses

We believe in the quality of our product. uberAgent is available for download as a fully functional version. Only restriction: without a valid license file a splash screen is displayed during each logon.

If you want to try uberAgent in production or conduct a PoC, you can remove the splash screen with a time-limited evaluation license we are happy to supply you with. Request your eval license now!
